Call for Proposals

This Group welcomes proposals for individual papers and for full panels on all topics related to the religious/spiritual lives of gay, bi-, trans-, and queer-identified men. We are especially interested in proposals that explore:

• How scholarly approaches to religion impact LGBTQ religious and/or political advocacy and activism, especially in communities of color and/or in Chicago
• The spiritual practices of men who have sex with men but who don’t identify as gay
• Religious responses to HIV/AIDS and its impact on gay male lives and communities
• Kent Brintnall’s Ecce Homo: The Male-Body-in-Pain as Redemptive Figure (University of Chicago Press, 2011)
• For a cosponsored session with the Lesbian-Feminist Issues and Religion Group — the new visibility of teen suicides, particularly of LGBTQ and sexual minority youth

Mission

This Group seeks to understand and provide scholarly reflection and writing on the varied intersections of gay male experience, religious traditions, and spiritual practices. We seek to affirm the contributions made to religious scholarship by gay male perspectives, methodologies, and approaches. We also seek to challenge the privileging of those perspectives that undermine or discredit such contributions.

Anonymity of Review Process

Proposals are anonymous to Chairs and steering committee members until after final acceptance/rejection.
