New AAR Board of Directors Structure Print

At the 2010 November Annual Business Meeting, the AAR membership voted to approve new bylaws that altered the structure of the AAR Board of Directors. The Board was reduced from twenty-seven members to twelve members. New positions were also created to better serve the membership’s needs and be more attentive to general business best practices.

The new AAR Board members and positions are as follows:

Kwok Pui Lan, Episcopal Divinity School

President

Serves a one-year term and automatically becomes President after serving a one-year term as President-Elect and a one-year term as Vice President. The President chairs the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, and Audit Committee. He or she also serves as moderator of the Awards Ceremony and Annual Business Meeting at the AAR Annual Meeting. The President makes appointments to AAR Working Groups after consultation with Working Group Chairs and members. The President also performs other tasks as asked by the AAR Executive Office and Board of Directors.

Serves a one-year term automatically upon completion of a one-year term as Vice President. The President-Elect serves on the Executive Committee and Audit Committee. The President-Elect also performs other tasks as asked by the AAR Executive Office and Board of Directors.

Vice President

Serves a one-year term, so candidates run for election every year. The current Vice President will automatically become President-Elect in 2012 and President in 2013 without additional elections. During his or her tenure, the Vice President will have the opportunity to affect AAR policy in powerful ways; in particular, during the presidential year, the incumbent makes many of the appointments of members to openings on working groups. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors, the Vice President also serves on the Executive, Audit, and Program Committees.

Serves a three-year term, so candidates run for election every third year. The next election for Secretary will take place in 2011. The Secretary is responsible for recording and verifying the official records of the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, and the Annual Business Meeting.

 
     

Donna Bowman, Honors College, Central Arkansas University

Serves a three-year term, so candidates run for election every third year. The next election for Treasurer will take place in 2012. The Treasurer is responsible for all aspects of the AAR finances, from operating budgets to investments. The Treasurer serves on the Executive Committee and chairs the Finance Committee.

 
     

Janet R. Jakobsen, Barnard College
Member Advocate

     
 

Member Advocate

Serves a three-year term. The candidates for this position are chosen by the Executive Committee. The Member Advocate shall lead the Board’s efforts to communicate effectively with the membership and shall help to administer policies that may be adopted by the Board. He or she will review the Board’s efforts to be responsive to groups that seek to influence and contest Board policies, and will make recommendations, when necessary, concerning how the AAR can best reach out to its members.

Program Unit Director

Serves a three-year term, so candidates run for election every third year. The next election for Program Unit Director will take place in 2013. The Program Unit Director must have prior experience as a Program Unit Chair. He or she will represent the needs and interests of the Program Units to the Board of Directors. This person is also charged with keeping before the Board important matters regarding the Annual Meeting. The Program Unit Director also chairs the Program Committee.

Serves a three-year term, so candidates run for election every third year. The next election for Regions Director will take place in 2012. The Regions Director must have prior experience in the leadership of an AAR region. He or she will represent the needs and interests of the AAR’s ten regions to the Board of Directors. The Regions Director serves on the Planning Committee.

Serves a two-year term, so candidates run for election every second year. The Student Director position will be up for election in 2011 and again in 2013. The Student Director is a member of the Board of Directors, representing the particular concerns and issues of AAR student members at large. In addition, the Student Director works with the Graduate Student Committee and serves on the Planning Committee.

At-Large Directors

There are three At-Large Directors serving on the Board of Directors at any given time. Each At-Large Director serves a three-year term, so candidates run for election every third year. This means that there is an election for a new At-Large Director each and every year. At-Large Directors have no particular brief, but may, as needed, be tasked by the Board of Directors with various duties. They are charged to represent the needs and interests of the general AAR membership to the Board of Directors. At-Large Directors have a presence on the Finance, Program, and Planning Committees.
