Call for Proposals

This Consultation encourages proposals from scholars of diverse religious traditions and locations who engage in historical, social scientific, humanistic, conceptual, and other methods of research related to children and childhood. We invite proposals for papers and panels in all areas. In addition, we especially welcome proposals on the following topics:

  • Children and Hinduism, including children’s experiences in Hinduism, historical and contemporary Hindu constructions of childhood, and Hindu perspectives on issues such as families and children’s rights (for a possible cosponsored session with the Hinduism Group)

  • Children, religion, and popular culture (for a possible cosponsored session with the Religion and Popular Culture Group)

  • Children’s relations to and constructions in film

  • Children’s lived religions in the Mediterranean world

  • Children, religion, and race in the United States

Mission

This Consultation’s overall aim is to investigate a number of important but relatively unexplored issues in the field of religion regarding children. The specific goals of the Group are as follows:

  • Provide a forum for focused interdisciplinary and interreligious dialogue about children and religion

  • Heighten academic interest in this topic in all fields represented in the academy

  • Prepare scholars in religious studies to contribute to wider academic discussions about children

  • Lend the voice of the academy to current questions of public policy and child advocacy

Our focus is both timely and significant, given the present concern for children in our culture and the rising interdisciplinary academic interest in childhood studies. In general, we hope that this Group will provide a forum for sustained and informed reflection on children and childhood and thereby enable a community of scholars to develop a new line of academic inquiry regarding children and religion.

Anonymity of Review Process

Proposals are anonymous to Chairs and Steering Committee Members until after final acceptance or rejection.
