Call for Proposals

This Group invites proposals on the following themes:

• For a cosponsored session with the Death, Dying, and Beyond Group — possible topics include, but are not restricted to, the Tibetan Book of the Dead in the West, hospice and preparation for death, and Buddhist memorial rites
• Buddhism and healing (especially in psychotherapeutic contexts)
• Marginalized Buddhist groups or Buddhism’s relation to other marginalized religious groups in the West
• Sexuality
• Buddhist Geeks
• Buddhism and educational institutions
• Buddhists and inter/intra-religious dialogue
• Institutionalization of Buddhism in the West
• Nichiren Buddhisms in the West
• Open call

Mission

This Group seeks to:

• Provide a venue for new studies on Buddhism in non-Asian locales
• Further communication and exchange between scholars working on Buddhism outside of Asia
• Offer a forum within which to collectively clarify the intellectual and methodological underpinnings of research on Buddhism in the West, and consider new possibilities in methods and approaches

The Group’s scope is defined by both an object of study (Buddhism) and a geographic area: the West, understood here broadly as including the Americas, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand (work on other non-Asian areas may also be considered if proponents can make a strong case for their relevancy). The Group hopes not only to nurture a rapidly growing subfield but to stimulate interest in this area in related disciplines, such as Buddhist studies and American religious history.

Anonymity of Review Process

Proposals are anonymous to Chairs and steering committee members during review, but visible to Chairs prior to final acceptance or rejection.
