Mission Statement

The Southeastern Commission for the Study of Religion (SECSOR) promotes the scholarly study and teaching of religion in the Southeast and the professional development of members of its sponsoring and affiliate societies in the Southeast:

• The American Academy of Religion (AAR/SE)
• The Society of Biblical Literature (SBL/SE)
• The American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR/SE)

With an Executive Board comprised of representatives from these societies, SECSOR carries out its mission through sponsoring a joint Annual Meeting of the societies and other activities.

2013 Southeastern Commission for the Study of Religion Annual Meeting

The plenary speaker for the 2013 Southeastern Commission for the Study of Religion annual meeting is Randall Balmer, Chair of the Department of Religion at Dartmouth. Balmer is a leading scholar on evangelicalism in the United States and his work includes the book God in the White House - A History: How Faith Shaped the Presidency from John F. Kennedy to George W. Bush (HarperOne, 2008). His work connects with this year's SECSOR theme of "Religion and the Culture War in America."

Seeking Executive Director Nominations

The Southeastern Commission for the Study of Religion (SECSOR) seeks an Executive Director for a five-year term. The Executive Director should be a tenured professor teaching within the region and a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and/or the American Academy of Religion (whose regional meetings cooperate to establish SECSOR). The primary duties of the Executive Director include the arrangements of the annual regional meeting, which is typically negotiated with a conference hotel, oversight of preregistration and registration, preparation of e-mailed newsletters and the website, and overseeing administrative duties involving soliciting member institutions, recruiting exhibitors and program advertisements, and managing finances and financial reports. The executive officers of the participating organizations are primarily responsible for putting together the program of sessions for the annual meeting. Historically, the Executive Director has been a volunteer position, but the commission is considering funding back-office assistance and/or other modest financial assistance, in negotiation with the prospective Executive Director.
