Call for Proposals

This Group requests submissions of papers related to the following topics:

• Latina/o religion and fatherhood as well as more general forms of masculinity, or the ways religion shapes and informs myths and realities of fatherhood. In particular, we are interested in research on the intersections of machismo, eros, and spirituality among Latino men or research related to the mari-macha or female macho identity


• Latina/o youth culture in relation to religion and spirituality, particularly the rise of the Latino “nones”


• For a cosponsored session with the Afro-American Religious History Group, African diaspora traditions in the Latina/o Americas — particularly Santeria — but also the ways that African diaspora cultures intersect and coalesce with Latina/o urban practices through Islam, Pentecostalism, and Rastafarian expressions

Mission

This Group, founded in 2009, fosters interdisciplinary and theoretically innovative analyses of Latina/o religiosities and spiritualities in the Americas. Our goal is to advance knowledge and ways of knowing that expand traditional areas of religious studies with respect to Latina/o communities, mindful of transnational and global realities. Thus, we encourage studies that explore non-Western beliefs and practices, including the indigenous, the African diasporic, Buddhist, and Islamic, as well as those that advance more complex understanding of culturally hybrid Christianities. We wish to foster dialogue that is respectful of the culturally different theological understandings of the sacred within different traditional or emerging spiritualities. We encourage feminist- and queer-centered perspectives as well as thought rooted in community experience.

Proposer names are anonymous to Chairs and Steering Committee members until after final acceptance or rejection.
