Comparative Studies in Hinduisms and Judaisms Print

Call for Proposals

This Group seeks to bring together specialists in South Asia and Judaica to discuss topics within Hindu and Jewish traditions, with the intention of revisioning categories and developing alternative models to the Protestant-based paradigms that have tended to dominate the academic study of religion. Presenters need not have expertise in both Hindu and Jewish traditions. We invite papers on the following themes:

  • What have Hindus and Jews to do with each other? — comparison as critical interrogation

  • Esotericism and eroticism in Kabbalah and Tantra

  • Cosmograms and mandalas — mapping cosmologies and divinities

  • Authority and hermeneutics in Hindu and Jewish law

  • Women’s purity practices and other ritual disciplines

Proposals on other topics are also welcome. We strongly encourage prearranged session proposals in the form of thematic paper sessions or roundtables.
