Religion and Disability Studies Print

Call for Proposals

This Group invites proposals in all areas related to disability and religion. We are particularly interested in:

  • Engaging disability studies theorists and activists in religious studies and religious communities
  • Exploring intersections between religion, disability, literature, and art
  • Expanding disability theology beyond theologies of metaphorical bodies and toward theologies of embodiment
  • Engaging with Darla Schumm and Michael Stoltzfus, eds. Disability and Religious Diversity and Disability in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011)
  • Exploring, in a cosponsored session with the Religion and Ecology Group, intersections of environmental crisis and disability — the social/religious refiguring of disability in light of the Anthropocene, the relationship between environmental health, toxics, and disability, and critical race/class implications of how bodies are affected by environmental risk

Mission

This Group is committed to maintaining the visibility, viability, and value of the experience and politics of disability as they relate to the study and practice of religion. Meaningful inclusion of the experience of persons with disabilities is a critical component in the scholarly study of religion.

Anonymity of Review Process

Proposer names are visible to Chairs but anonymous to steering committee members.
