Call for Proposals

This Group invites proposals from across the full range of anthropological theories and methods that address diverse traditions, regions, and periods. Given San Francisco’s proximity to Silicon Valley, we welcome submissions on the following topics:

  • Religion and technology — adoptions or rejections of technologies by religious communities, technologies of the sacred, or religion and transhumanism
  • Applied anthropology — technology in the home or intervention/use of technology by corporations and states
  • Tanya Luhrmann’s new book Hearing God: An Anthropological Account of the Way God Becomes Real for American Evangelical Christians (forthcoming)
  • Screenings, with discussion, of works of visual ethnographic scholarship in religion (films/videos of any length and multimedia) — for a possible cosponsored session with the Religion, Film, and Visual Culture Group
  • Rituals of ethnography — for a possible cosponsored session with the Ritual Studies Group

Mission

This Group draws together scholars who utilize the methodological tools and theoretical perspectives of anthropology in the study of religion as a social and cultural phenomenon. Given the increasing importance of anthropology and ethnography for the academic study of religion, we serve the AAR community as an important forum for sustained discussion and critique of anthropological approaches that can connect scholars working on diverse traditions, regions, and eras who otherwise might not have the opportunity to learn from each other’s work. To this end, we also run a listserv that can be joined by sending a blank e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Anonymity of Review Process

Proposals are anonymous to Chairs and Steering Committee Members during review, but visible to Chairs prior to final acceptance or rejection.
