Call for Proposals

This Group invites proposals in all areas related to disability and religion. We are particularly interested in the following topics:

• The San Francisco Bay Area, including connections with the history and development of disability rights and the Independent Living Movement, which began in Berkeley
• Bringing disability studies perspectives to particular disciplines within religious studies, including textual studies, historical studies of religion, comparative religion, and theology
• Issues of theological anthropology and discourses of vulnerability, and/or Deborah Creamer’s Disability and Christian Theology: Embodied Limits and Constructive Possibilities (New York, NY: Oxford University Press, 2008)
• Proposals related to conscience/dissent, violence, microaggressions, and the use of language/metaphor
• Proposals examining the queering of disability studies and religion (for a possible cosponsored session with the Lesbian-Feminist Issues and Religion Group)

Mission

This Group is committed to maintaining the visibility, viability, and value of the experience and politics of disability as they relate to the study and practice of religion. Meaningful inclusion of the experience of persons with disabilities is a critical component in the scholarly study of religion.

Anonymity of Review Process

Proposer names are visible to Chairs but anonymous to Steering Committee Members.
