Call for Proposals

This Group invites papers on the following topics:

  • For a cosponsored session with the Wesleyan Studies Group — anthropology, affections, and awakenings in Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758) and John Wesley (1703–1791). Papers proposed for this session should be comparative in character and should give significant attention to both figures. We especially encourage papers that focus on one of the following three questions: How is the human self pictured or conceptualized (anthropology)? How is human life driven or directed (affections)? How is human community established, renewed, and refashioned (awakenings)?
  • Evangelicals and the early Christian creeds and councils — the hermeneutics, problematics, and systematics of interpreting, disputing, confessing, teaching, and applying the creeds and councils today
  • Contemporary Evangelical interpretations of and encounters with Islam
  • Allah and the triune God

AAR members are also encouraged to submit complete panel proposals of their own design for consideration by the Group.

Mission

This Group is one of a very few academic professional groups specifically created for the academic study of evangelical theology without a confessional requirement for membership or participation and that seeks to be diverse with regard to gender, denomination, ethnicity, and culture. The Group seeks to construct sessions at each Annual Meeting that address crucial issues both within the evangelical communities of North America and the world and between evangelicals and non-evangelical religious movements and theologies. The Group sponsors sessions with theological, historical, and/or sociological foci. The Group’s goal has always been to stay on the “cutting edge” of evangelical thought and to cross boundaries between evangelical and non-evangelical religious communities in order to create dialogue and constructive mutual understanding.

Anonymity of Review Process

Proposals are anonymous to Chairs and steering committee members until after final acceptance/rejection.
