Anthropology of Religion Print

Call for Proposals

This Group invites proposals from across the full range of anthropological theories and methods, exploring diverse traditions, regions, and periods, and addressing various facets of religion, including practices, embodiment, beliefs, social mobilization, etc. We welcome submissions on the following topics:

  • Religion in the public sphere
  • Religion and politics — especially issues of class, capitalism, resistance, and protest
  • Situated ethics — see Lambek, ed., Ordinary Ethics: Anthropology, Language, and Action, Fordham University Press, 2010
  • Ethnography and theology — see Scharen and Vigen, eds., Ethnography as Christian Theology and Ethics, Continuum, 2011

We also seek proposals for ten-minute presentations that will demonstrate and discuss the use of alternative media in research and dissemination. Panel sessions on these or other issues related to the Group’s area of focus are very welcome.

Mission

This Group draws together scholars who utilize the methodological tools and theoretical perspectives of anthropology in the study of religion as a social and cultural phenomenon. Given the increasing importance of anthropology and ethnography for the academic study of religion, we serve the AAR community as an important forum for sustained discussion and critique of anthropological approaches that can connect scholars working on diverse traditions, regions, and eras who otherwise might not have the opportunity to learn from each other’s work. To this end, we also run a listserv that can be joined by sending a blank e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
