Theology and the Political |
Call for ProposalsThis Consultation has chosen as its session’s topic “New Directions? Democracy, Theology, and the Politics of Life Itself.” We invite proposals that examine the theoretical and political opportunities and challenges represented by interdisciplinary considerations of the role and function of theology in twenty-first century public life. We are particularly interested in innovative proposals that provide fresh insights and new possibilities for critical engagements with conceptual, empirical, and historical studies of democracy in light of contemporary configurations of political and economic power. We seek to deepen the discourse on the theme of democracy and theology by taking specific aim at analyzing how life itself is being fundamentally transformed by new theoretical and political forces animated by theology and theologically informed resources. MissionThis Consultation provides a forum for religious studies scholars, philosophers, and theologians to critically reflect on different forms of the “political” and draw out the theoretical and practical significance for the task of theology. The research interests of this Consultation range across academic disciplines with acute attention to critically reflecting on and interrogating the very concepts of the political and the theological. Our exploration and analysis of these concepts is therefore intentionally interdisciplinary and engages scholarship in the areas of critical theory, philosophy, political theory, feminist theory, and postcolonial theory. Anonymity of Review ProcessProposals are anonymous to Chairs and Steering Committee Members until after final acceptance or rejection. Questions?Hent de Vries Corey D. B.
