Indigenous Religious Traditions Print

Call for Proposals

This Group invites submissions addressing the following topics:

  • Immigration and border issues and indigenous peoples, including recent actions concerning events on the United States–Mexican border and diasporas of indigenous peoples and religious traditions
  • Linkages between and among indigenous peoples around the Pacific basin
  • Sacred mountains — for a possible joint session with the Buddhism Section
  • Explorations of the connections among Indigenous, Chicana/o, Latina/o, and/or Ladina/o identities — for a possible cosponsored session with the Latina/o Critical and Comparative Studies Consultation

We also welcome papers on other themes dealing with indigenous traditions. Please direct inquiries to either Program Unit Co-chair.

Mission

This Group focuses on theoretical, methodological, and conceptual issues in the study of indigenous religious traditions throughout the world. Though particularly interested in interdisciplinary approaches to the study of indigenous religion, we are primarily grounded in the “history of religions” approach as it concerns phenomenological and historical analysis of indigenous traditions. We are also concerned with the interface of indigenous religious traditions and modernity, colonial and postcolonial conditions, and local and global forces that shape the practice of indigenous traditions.

Anonymity of Review Process

Proposals are anonymous to Chairs and Steering Committee Members during review, but visible to Chairs prior to final acceptance or rejection.
