Call for Proposals

This Consultation invites proposals that use sociology to theoretically and empirically examine the role of religion in societies globally. We are especially, but not exclusively, interested in the following topics:

• Sociology of religion and the legacy and potential of the University of California, Berkeley, Sociology Department (e.g., Bellah, Goffman, Glock, Stark, Wuthnow, Swidler, Wacquant, Jay, etc.)
• Civil religion today
• The “unsung heroes” of sociology of religion (e.g., Simmel, Elias, Luhmann, Etzioni, etc.)
• Religious and social change in the Mediterranean

Mission

This Consultation provides a forum for the discussion of empirical and theoretical research on religion and society. “Sociology” is broadly conceived; discussions will include different epistemologies, varying theoretical backgrounds, qualitative and quantitative methodologies, and a wide range of empirical data. By liaising with other Program Units, we seek to provide a platform for research that empirically and theoretically engages the question of the role of religion in societies globally.

Anonymity of Review Process

Proposals are anonymous to Chairs and Steering Committee Members until after final acceptance or rejection.
