Call for Proposals

This Section invites proposals on the following topics and/or books:

  • Leibniz

  • Atonement, forgiveness, and reconciliation

  • Race and the philosophical imagination of religion

  • The power of desires, seduction, appetite, or persuasion — responses to Virginia Burrus, Mark D. Jordan, and Karmen MacKendrick’s Seducing Augustine: Bodies, Desires, Confessions (Fordham University Press, 2010)

  • The place of wisdom in philosophy and theology

  • Responses to Barbara Herrnstein Smith’s Natural Reflections: Human Cognition at the Nexus of Science and Religion (Yale University Press, 2010)

  • Disagreement in Rancier and Laclau

  • The historical and conceptual formation of the category of religion — cosponsored with the North American Association for the Study of Religion

  • Why/How does Buddhism matter for the philosophy of religion? — cosponsored with the Buddhist Philosophy Group

  • The place of metaphysics in theology — critical responses to Kevin W. Hector’s Theology Without Metaphysics: God, Language, and the Spirit of Recognition (Cambridge University Press, 2011)

We encourage proposals for prearranged panels on these or other topics that will be of interest to philosophers of religion.

Mission

This Section analyzes the interface between philosophy and religion, including both philosophical positions or arguments within various specific religious traditions and more generalized philosophical theories about religion. We include in our purview not only traditional topics of Western philosophy of religion but also those arising from non-Western traditions and from the study of religion in a comparative context.

Anonymity of Review Process

Proposals are anonymous to Chairs and steering committee members until after final acceptance/rejection.
